Review — Flip The Script

‘Flip The Script’ is basically the follow up to Bruce Feldman’s ‘Meat Market’ except in this case LSU Head Coach Ed Orgeron is listed as the author with Feldman riding copilot. In any event, Orgeron did turn things around for himself since he left Ole Miss and this book covers that and the time before to make a solid redemption story with an impressive outcome.

The thing I really appreciated about this book was Orgeron’s candor when it came to his battle with addiction. Orgeron was in a great job as defensive line coach at Miami back in its first heyday and he was very young coaching NFL Hall of Fame talent. But the battle with bottle took that opportunity away from him. He sobered up and took the long hard road back to the top.

Another interesting take away is his time at USC. He has said again and again that NOT getting that head coaching job after Lane Kiffin was fired was one of the hardest times of his life. In my opinion it was a seriously dumb move by USC to not retain Orgeron and make him the head coach but their loss was LSUs gain. He dives into his time in LA as deeply as he takes you through his time at LSU to give you a better idea of why he felt he had earned the job.

Orgeron is quite candid about making mistakes and moving on from them. For example he always comes back to how he would have handling things differently at Ole Miss than he does at LSU. From situation with players to members of the media. He has clearly grown, taken on new ideas and trusts his staff more than ever before.

With only a few weeks left before the season, this might be the one last book you pick up to get you goin before kick off. It’s a fast past read and does not dwell too long on any one thing. Give it a shot…even if you’re not an LSU fan.
